TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN
Teaching Staff:
Sperrin College’s Technology & Design Department is where practical solutions come to life through imaginative thinking and graphical presentation. The department is well resourced and consists of two classrooms; one of which has a suite of computers, two well-resourced workshops and a larger foyer where excellent work is on display.
The department enjoys continued success:
95% of all GCSE pupils were awarded A*-C grades in the last 3 years.
KS3
At KS3 (Years 8-10), Technology and Design is delivered over three lessons per fortnight. The subject content is delivered through design and manufacture projects where pupils not only gather knowledge and understanding of Technological theory but also get hands on skills with various resistant materials.

GCSE
At Key Stage 4, pupils will study CCEA Technology & Design at GCSE level or can opt for Occupational Studies (Bench joinery & Hand fitting) which is a level 2 qualification Both courses are delivered over six lessons per fortnight.
Technology & Design: (Product Design option)
Technology and Design encourages students to be innovative, creative and to problem solve independently. They explore and examine the work of other designers, look at core areas such as electronics, mechanisms and pneumatics all the while developing excellent manufacturing skills both with hand tools and using new technologies.
Core Content is covered in year 11 with an exam in the May of year 11 (worth 25%)
Product Design option is covered in year 12 with an exam in the May of year 12 (worth 25%) and a piece of coursework which consists of a 10-page portfolio & a manufactured product (worth 50%).
Occupational Studies: (Level 2 Bench Joinery & hand fitting)
This innovative qualification is targeted at learners who may have a more hands on approach to learning with a focus on manufacturing skills and developing a clear pathway for the world of work or further education.
Year 11 – Bench Joinery module. Pupils produce a coffee table with booklet of supporting evidence, knowledge and evaluation. (worth 50%)
Year 12 – Hand fitting module. Pupils produce a metal work hammer with booklet of supporting evidence, knowledge and evaluation. (worth 50%)
There is no exam for this course.
